If you are running into licensing issues for secure WMA and WMV downloads obtained from our store, you may see errors displayed in your media player. Corruption of secure file licenses may cause one of the following errors to be displayed when you try to play a secure WMA or WMV file:

“There was a problem attempting to individualize your computer.”

“The license is invalid.”

“The license failed.”

“Secure storage protection error. Restore your licenses from a previous backup and try again.”

There are several possible causes for such problems, including:

CPU change (processor swap on your computer)

Moving the hard disk (hard drive) onto which music and video was initially downloaded from one computer to another

Using products such as registry cleaners which may alter the DRM (digital rights management) application within your player in ways that cause corruption

To work around these issues, we highly recommend you backup your licenses onto a storage medium before making any of the three changes mentioned above.

Since you are usually entitled to multiple licenses with every purchase, it is easy to back up the encrypted files (on a CD-R or DVD), move them to the new computer or hard drive, and then obtain licenses for them again. To obtain licenses again, you must:

-      Open each file while your computer is connected to the web

-      The first time you open such a file, it will call for a new license from our system. A license prompt will open inviting you to login using either your username and password or your redemption code. You must have one of these pieces of information for authentication purposes.

-      Upon login in, you will receive your license.

-      If the security settings on your computer allow basic cookie placement, you should not have to repeat this process for all files – you will already be logged in. You can open the other files and obtain additional licenses without seeing the login prompt again.

-      If you can not authenticate using the license prompt, it might be that:

o    You are using the wrong username and password or redemption code

o    You have already maxed out on your allotted licenses for the file

Important note: If your player is generating any other type of odd error code, please use the search box at www.microsoft.com to find information about the potential cause for the problem and the recommended fix. Enter the error code you experienced, and follow Microsoft’s advice on how to try and resolve the problem. You may also consider contacting Microsoft support.
